Pick up your bikes in Ennis and experience the splendid views of Clare's magnificant coastline. This cycle route includes the world famous Cliffs of Moher and Spanish Point, scene of the 1588 Armada ships wreck as well as Lahinch, host of the 2019 Irish golf open. Spend time on this beautiful beach before you cycle on. Take in the breathtaking views as you approach the meandering slopes to the picturesque town of Doolin where you will spend two nights. A boat trip to the rugged Aran islands is the highlight of the tour. You can bring your bike and cycle to the world heritage site of Dun Aonghasa which is set on dramatic 300 ft cliff edge. Our first stop is the vibrant town of Ennis and the start of your tour into the rugged beauty of the Burren region and the Wild Atlantic way. Ennis is the county town of County Clare. It is located on the River Fergus, north of where it enters the Shannon Estuary, with its narrow streets, historical buildings and busy market town atmosphere. A stop here is the perfect start to one of Ireland's most scenic bike routes.
Ennis to Spanish Point - Distance 35km / Gradient 210mtrs
Depart Ennis and follow the R474 road through unspoilt countryside to the village of Connolly. At approximately 23 km you will get the first views of the magnificent Atlantic ocean. Cycle on for 9kms and take the left turn for Spanish Point as you approach Miltow Malby. Take in the splendid views of the Atlantic as you approach your destination and the Armada hotel.
This picturesque town gets its name from the Spanish sailors who were buried here after their ships were wrecked in storms in 1588. It also hosts a Blue flag award winning beach . The area is also famous for its exquisite sea food. A visit to the nearby town of Miltown Malby is definitely worth undertaking and is renouned as one of the main traditonal Irish music hubs in Ireland.
Spanish Point via Cliffs of Moher to Doolin / Distance 31km / Gradient 289 mtrs
Depart Spanish point on the R482 coastal road where the Wild Atlantic way tour starts in earnest. Continue on the N67 and take in the beauty of Liscannor Bay as you approach Lahinch.
Lahinch is a beautiful coastal resort with surfing and golf its main tourist attraction. The golf course hosted the 2019 Golf Irish Open. Stopping here will reward with views of a beautiful and enchanting landscape. Cycle on to the R478 road to the coastal village of Liscannor and visit the monument of John Holland, birthplace of the inventor of the submarine.
Cycle on for another few kilometres passing stunning views over Liscannor bay and as you approach the world famous Cliffs of Moher. A stop here is one of the highlights of the tour and not to be missed.
Proceeding onwards take the winding roads down to the beautiful town of Doolin and your destination. Located on the edge of the historic Burren in northwest County Clare, Doolin’s dramatic landscape, restaurants and the beautiful harbour make it the perfect two night stop over.
Aran Island Boat tour and Cycle - Inish more Pier to Dun Aonghasa & tour- (from 17km - to 30 kms) - gradient 80mtrs
Depart your accommodation and cycle the short trip to Doolin harbour. You will board your pre booked Aran Island ferry day trip for the 65 minute crossing to Kilronan port on Inishmore, largest of the 3 Aran Islands. You can explore the village before riding the 8.5 kms out along the coast road to Dún Aonghasa, the Stone Age cliff top fort that dominates the western end of the island. There is the option to continue the ride and explore other features including the puffing holes and the Worm Hole (Poll na bPeist). This is a naturally created square, cut out in the rock at the bottom of a cliff and is a famous place for cliff diving. We recommend lunch at the Kilronan hotel. Following your day exploring this rugged landscape you will return by boat at the pre arranged time to Doolin and spend another night in one of the Ireland's cultural hotspots.
